Is Hair Shedding the Same as Hair Loss?

Data shows that over 250 million people in China are suffering from hair loss, with one in every six people experiencing it. Many people, especially those born in the 90s, are also troubled by hair loss. Some notice that they shed a lot of hair every time they wash it, leading them to worry if they are joining the ranks of those with hair loss. So, is hair shedding the same as hair loss?

The answer is no. Hair growth is cyclical, consisting of the growth phase, regression phase, and resting phase. The human scalp typically has around 100,000 hairs, with approximately 80% of them in the growth phase. Hairs in the regression and resting phases will naturally shed. On average, a person loses about 70-100 hairs a day, while an equivalent amount of hair also grows back, so there’s no need to worry excessively. However, if you experience excessive hair shedding in a short period, there may be a risk of hair loss.

What Causes Hair Loss?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, hair is considered a reflection of blood health. Hair loss is related to insufficient qi and blood in the body. “The kidney stores essence, controls bones, produces marrow, and its essence manifests in the hair.” The growth, shedding, and nourishment of hair are closely linked to the strength and decline of kidney essence. To prevent hair loss, I recommend three nourishing foods for hair growth and the correct way to wash your hair:

Three Nourishing Foods for Hair Growth

  1. Black Soybeans: Known as the “kidney’s grain,” they are sweet in taste, neutral in nature, and benefit the spleen and kidneys. They help strengthen the body, detoxify, and improve skin, making hair dark and shiny.
  2. Black Rice: Called the “black pearl,” black rice helps with digestion, warms the liver, and promotes blood circulation. Most of its nutritional value is found in the outer layer, so it’s best consumed with the skin.
  3. Black Sesame Seeds: A well-known kidney tonic, they are neutral and sweet in taste. Black sesame seeds help nourish the kidneys, improve internal organs, and are great for hair nourishment and skin health. They are especially effective for hair loss due to liver blood deficiency.

Tips for Washing Your Hair

When washing your hair, keep the following five points in mind:

  1. Avoid washing your hair too frequently.
  2. Don’t use too much shampoo.
  3. Ensure the water temperature is appropriate; avoid overly hot water.
  4. Don’t scratch the scalp with your nails; use your fingertips to gently massage.
  5. When drying your hair, avoid rubbing it back and forth to prevent damaging the hair cuticles.
