
Cicada Molting refers to the exuviae shed by the nymphs of Cryptotympana pustulata Fabricius, an insect of the Cicadidae family, during their metamorphosis. It is produced in most regions of China, with major production areas in Shandong, Henan, and Hebei provinces. It is collected in summer and autumn, cleaned of dirt and sand, and dried for medicinal use. It is used in its raw form.

Functions
Dispels wind-heat, promotes eruption and relieves itching, expels wind and relieves convulsions, clears superficial visual obstructions and improves eyesight.
Clinical Applications
- Used for exterior wind-heat invasion with sore throat and hoarseness.
- Used for the early stage of measles with incomplete eruption and wind rash with itching.
- Used for convulsions in infants, night crying, and tetanus.
- Used for wind-heat-induced red eyes, superficial visual obstructions, and excessive tearing.
Usage & Dosage
Decoction: 3-10g. It can also be ground into powder and taken with warm water. Lower doses are generally used for mild conditions, while higher doses are required for convulsion relief.
Precautions
Use with caution in pregnant women.
