Mulberry Leaf (Sang Ye)

Mulberry Leaf is the dried leaf of Morus alba L.. It is produced in most regions of China, with the majority found in the southern areas. It is harvested after the first frost, then dried and used either raw or honey-fried.

Functions

Dispels wind-heat, moistens the lungs and stops coughing, calms the liver, and improves vision.

Clinical Applications

  1. Used for exterior wind-heat invasion and early-stage febrile diseases, with symptoms such as fever, headache, and sore throat.
  2. Used for lung heat or dryness injuring the lungs, leading to cough with scanty phlegm and dryness of the nose and throat.
  3. Used for liver yang-induced dizziness and red, blurred vision.

Usage & Dosage

Decoction: 9-10g. It can also be used in pills or powders. For external use, it can be decocted and used as an eye wash. Honey-fried mulberry leaves enhance the lung-moistening and cough-relieving effects, making them more suitable for dry cough due to lung dryness.
