Tamarix (Cheng Liu)

Botanical Name: Tamarix chinensis Lour.
Plant Type: Shrub or small deciduous tree from the Tamaricaceae family.
Medicinal Part: Dried young branches and leaves.
Main Production Areas: Grown throughout China.
Harvesting & Processing: Collected in summer before flowering, then dried in the shade and cut into sections for raw use.

  • Releases the exterior and promotes rash eruption.
  • Dispels wind and removes dampness.

[Clinical Applications]

  1. Used for insufficient eruption of measles (when rash is slow to surface).
  2. Used for wind-cold-damp bi syndrome (joint pain due to wind, cold, and dampness).

[Dosage & Administration]

  • Decoction: 3-10g.
  • External use: Appropriate amount.

[Precautions]

  • Not suitable for measles that has already erupted. Excessive dosage may cause restlessness.
